Friends of Mary Ward

Identity

The Friends of Mary Ward (formerly known as Loreto Lay Associates) are a group of committed lay persons inspired by the vision and spirituality of Mary Ward. Drawn by a shared call, they come together to respond to the needs of the times and to live out a spirit of service rooted in faith.

As a lay extension of the Congregatio Jesu (Loreto) family, they seek to embody the charism of Mary Ward in their daily lives—marked by freedom, sincerity, justice, and joy.

Name and Evolution

Formerly known as the Loreto Lay Associates, the group is now called the Friends of Mary Ward, reflecting a renewed identity while remaining deeply rooted in the Loreto tradition and mission.

Association with Loreto

The Friends of Mary Ward maintain a close spiritual and missionoriented relationship with the Congregatio Jesu. While functioning as an autonomous lay body, they remain united with the Loreto family under the guidance of the Provincial Leader.

A Spiritual Animator, appointed from among the CJ sisters, accompanies the group in nurturing its spiritual growth. The relationship is marked by collaboration, mutual support, and a shared commitment to mission, without any expectation of financial remuneration.

Commitment

Membership involves a formal commitment. A new member undergoes a period of formation for at least one year, during which they are provided with materials for preparation and discernment. Following this period, the individual makes a formal promise. Members renew their commitment annually, reflecting on their journey and recommitting themselves to the mission and values of the group.

Formation

Formation is both initial and ongoing. New members participate in a structured formation process before making their first commitment. At the same time, all members are encouraged to continually grow in faith, deepen their understanding of Mary Ward’s spirituality, and develop their personal and social responsibilities.

Mission and Activities

The Friends of Mary Ward are actively engaged in a range of spiritual and social initiatives:

  • Annual Commitment Day
  • PAN India and international online gatherings
  • Retreats and orientation programmes
  • Christmas outreach for underprivileged children
  • Visits to Sishu Bhawan and Prem Daan
  • Exploration of a Friends of Mary Ward Spirituality Centre

Members remain committed to their personal missions while supporting one another and contributing collectively to initiatives focused on the girl child, youth, women, and families.

Structure

The group is organized with a President, Secretary, and Treasurer, elected for a term of two years without immediate reelection.

An Associate Council functions under the leadership of the Provincial Leader.

Annual General Meetings are conducted to review activities and present reports, including financial updates.

History and Growth

The movement began in 1998 in the South Asia Province. It has grown across multiple regions, including Bangladesh, Ranchi, Kolkata, Asansol, Shimla, and Lucknow.
